• Membership Committees – These include specific committees and task forces aimed at developing Fellows, Members, Associate Members and Student Members. Honorary Members are also designated where deemed appropriate.
• Publications Committee – This Committee is responsible for publishing Thalamus, an organization periodical distributed twice a year to members of the Academy.

Fellow and Member Criteria

Membership in the International Academy for Research in Learning Disabilities initially consisted of 50 founding members.

Today, membership is made up of four different classes. These include:

1. Academy Fellows: This membership class is composed of individuals from the world’s leadership in the scientific study of learning disabilities. A maximum of 300 Fellows is allowed in the Academy.
2. Members: This membership class is composed of an unlimited number of individuals who are researchers and/or practitioners in the scientific study of learning disabilities. With appropriate demonstration of research activities and publications in peer-reviewed journals in the academic literature, these Members can advance to the Fellow class.
3. Associate Members: This membership class is composed of individuals who are researchers and/or practitioners in learning disabilities but who do not possess a terminal degree in the field of learning disabilities or a related area.
4. Student Members: This membership class is composed of graduate or doctoral students in the scientific study of learning disabilities who are eligible for Academy membership upon recommendation by a faculty member of the student’s college or university.

Academy Fellows

To become an Academy Fellow of IARLD, individuals are nominated by Fellows or Members and are recommended to the Academy Fellows’ Committee. Membership in this class is open to representatives of all professional disciplines in the field of learning disabilities. In order to aid in stimulating ideas and research possibilities, no one discipline or country is represented by more than 49% of the total number of Academy Fellows.

The nomination is considered on the basis of the following required criteria:

1. Is a leading researcher, recognized nationally and/or internationally for his/her contribution to the scientific knowledge and understanding of learning disabilities, and
2. Has achieved scholarly distinction in the field of learning disabilities, and
3. Has made a distinguished contribution to learning disabilities research, and
4. Has published research articles in peer-reviewed journals in the academic literature.

An Academy Fellow is admitted for life unless unethical activities or malpractice result in termination of membership, and so long as membership fees are paid.

Academy Members

To become an Academy Member, self-initiated applications or nominations from Fellows or Members are considered and are recommended to the Members’ Committee. Membership in this class is open to representatives of all professional disciplines in the field of learning disabilities.

The nomination is considered on the basis of the following required criteria:

1. Has a terminal degree (e.g., PhD), and
2. Has provided evidence of completed research or research in progress in the field of learning disabilities, and/or has provided evidence of being a practitioner in the field of learning disabilities, and
3. Has published articles, reports or similar which contribute to knowledge and understanding of learning disabilities.

Associate Members

1. Has provided evidence of being exceedingly active and/or a leader in the field of learning disabilities, and
2. Has made major contributions to the understanding of learning disabilities through research, writing, or clinical work including teaching, policy development, or dissemination of information.

1. Is a graduate or doctoral student in the scientific study of learning disabilities, and
2. Has evidence of interest in and capacity to perform research in learning disabilities attested to by a faculty member of the student’s college or university

IARLD Tour of Niagara Falls

As a special conference event, the IARLD Conference Committee has arranged for members to tour Niagara Falls. The tour will be offered on Thursday June 19th from 8:30am to 3:30pm. The tour includes a private coach for IARLD attendees, an English-speaking driver/guide, lunch overlooking the falls, admission to the Maid of the Mist (a boat ride to the base of the falls), and free time in Niagara Falls. Friends and family are welcome!
